About Edward D.

As a Computer Science graduate who has created a proof-of-concept snowplow map, ‘smart’ tech installation for a local government innovation team, 2nd place winner in a local hackathon for a TensorFlow/OpenCV project, and creator of a recently wrapped up interactive activation to control LED lights via Twitch/YouTube chat and a website that raised money for a charity, I am very interested creative technologist roles. For my computer science capstone project, I created an IoT installation with the goal of making smart technology tangible and less intimidating to the public, for the Innovation Office at the City of Syracuse,(a small, start-up-like office in City government). The sensors were connected to two Arduinos, connected to a Raspberry Pi, via USB running an openFrameworks desktop application that visualized their distance to the sensors on addressable LED strips, via a FadeCandy. The project integrated IoT elements by sending that distance data to an AWS DynamoDB database and NodeJS website, on Heroku, using a Python script that sent the data it received from openFrameworks via a UDP socket. That project forced me to learn how to communicate complicated computer science ideas to a non-technical audience via a series of posters and illustrations for each piece of hardware. During the Summer of 2020, I launched controlmylights.net, an interactive light exhibit powered by a complex construction of NodeJS streaming data, Python, Redis, MongoDB, openFrameworks, ReactJS and Arduino controlling DIY LED tube lights. Chat data was gathered via Twitch’s API, and a Selenium scraping program for YouTube’s chat. It used Redis for an internal queue and pub/sub, as well as a MongoDB (NoSQL) database to store color commands. The program was architected using a Message Oriented Middleware paradigm with Node.JS as the main language. I created a website with buttons for every color that the light application supported using ReactJS and originally designed it in Figma. That project raised funds for Feeding America with several active users and over Twitch views. I am currently working on a lighting controller for another interactive LED design, and learning Three.JS.
