As Care of Churches officer, my job is to assist and advise the clergypeople and communities who look after the 327 churches – the majority of them medieval buildings listed at Grades I and II*- in the 231 parishes of England’s oldest Diocese. I handle and process incoming applications for faculty and am the point of liaison between parishes and the Diocesan Advisory Committee. I’m also the point of liaison with all interested third parties, including architects, Historic England, local planning authorities and national amenity societies. In addition, my responsibilities include providing information, training and guidance for parishes on how best to look after their buildings and operating the quinquennial inspection system. During the first three years I’ll also be working on a project supported by Historic England to compile a register of all the churches in the Diocese with a view to assessing their long-term viability.
