About Ed Herlihy

I currently divide my time between the Boston area in Massachusetts, and Fort Myers area in Florida. My overarching passion is to introduce aspiring sailors to life on the water, and to instill respect and gratitude for the sea and all that it provides. I truly love both the independence and team work that are integral to sailing. On a boat, you work as a team to reach your destination, or you chart a new course. Below you can see a sample of the ASA 101 and ASA 103 Training that I developed as a supplement to the instruction I deliver. I am also a USCG Licensed Captain, and ASA Sailing Instructor. I have exceptional mechanical, electrical aptitude. I am also a sailboat owner, and treat my customer\'s boat, as if it were my own. I have rebuilt engines and pumps, installed electronics, plumbing, heating, engines and drive lines, and wired electrical panels to ABYC standards. I understand, can plan, and have installed marine networks (NMEA 0183, NMEA VHF, and AIS systems. I am best at leveraging my experience and skills to relate new or complex technologies in understandable terms, solve problems, and improve results. Other areas in which I excel in include; development and delivery of training and customer presentations, and assessing learning. I have extensive experience in engineering, service, sales, sales support, training and marketing for computing technology providers. The computing technologies and applications with which I have had direct sales and engineering experience include High Performance Computing (HPC), Cloud Architecture, big data (Hadoop, Hortonworks, Cloudera, Zettaset, etc.), High Frequency Trading (HFT), networking and enterprise network management with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Continuous Data Protection (CDP), backup, storage technologies including all levels of RAID, Network Attached Storage (NAS)- including CIFS and NFS, Storage Virtualization, and Storage Area Networking (SAN) based on iSCSI, FC and Ethernet.

Experience

  1. Sailing Instructor

    Offshore Sailing School

    Jan 2014 — Present

In the winter months, rather than suffering through another New England winter, I teach US Sailing and Colgate Sailing curricula to new and aspiring sailors on a part time basis. This position allows me to combine my sailboat racing experience and passion for cruising with my ability to communicate complex concepts in simple relate-able terms. I truly enjoy teaching good seamanship and introducing clients to the sailing lifestyle in this idyllic setting. Specifically I provide my clients with classroom and on-the-water instruction in; keel boat handling, sail trim, outboard motor use, and safety on the Colgate 26, or Jeanneau 43. The time spent on board the boat usually includes some dolphin, manatee, osprey, sea turtle and pelican watching.Sunrises and sunsets here, in southwest Florida, are amazingly beautiful!
