ABOUT ED DE QUINCEY
I am a Professor of Computer Science in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics at Keele University, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the BCS.I have worked in the area of online human behaviour for 18 years, looking into the usability and impact of websites as well as uses of the information that they collect. This has included an investigation into the potential of “Big Data” sources such as Twitter to detect disease outbreaks, which has received international press coverage e.g. The Telegraph, The Times of India, featured by the HPA’s annual conference and was a finalist for an Ehealth Insider Prize. Using similar approaches, I have also investigated hay fever, psychosis, political frictions and the politics of appropriation (funded by the British Academy). I am currently working with medical practitioners at the University Hospital North Midlands looking into interface design guidelines for mobile applications and on an AHRC funded project looking into representation and appropriation in mediated activism.I’ve combined my research interests with my teaching and have explored the uses of Web 2.0 tools in learning and teaching and am now looking at how Learning Analytics can be used to improve student outcomes and curriculum design (funded by HEFCE and Jisc). I have previously worked as a Principal Lecturer at the University of Greenwich and a Researcher at City University, London.
