About Ed Wolfrum
I lead the Analytical Sciences Group within the Renewable Resources and Enabling Sciences Center at NLR. This group is a team of analytical scientists and analytical chemistry technicians that provides analytical chemistry support to multiple internal and external clients and develops new analytical methods for biomass characterization. The group is best-known for its standardized biomass analysis methods, known as Laboratory Analytical Procedures, or The group regularly interacts with external stakeholders including ASTM, NIST, EPA, and multiple commercial collaborators. I also serve as Principal Investigator of the Feedstock Conversion Interface Consortium The FCIC is a collaborative effort of the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) which includes interdisciplinary researchers from nine National Laboratories to quantify, understand, and manage variability in biomass from the field through downstream conversion and to understand how feedstock composition, structure, and behavior impacts overall system performance. As the overall scientific and technical leader of the FCIC, I work with all FCIC members to ensure superior performance and alignment of all FCIC work with the vision of the FCIC.My research interests include understanding how low-cost, rapid, non-destructive spectroscopic techniques combined with multivariate statistical analysis can be used for rapid biomass characterization. My key technical competencies include biomass compositional analysis using both conventional and rapid analysis methods, low-temperature biomass conversion, experimental design and exploratory data analysis, and multivariate statistics.I am the author or co-author of over 100 publications, including 50 peer-reviewed journal Specialties: Biomass Compositional AnalysisMultivariate StatisticsChemometricsExploratory Data Analysis (EDA)Near-Infrared SpectroscopyAnalytical ChemistryStatistical Programming with R

I currently lead Biomass Compositional Analysis Team, a collection of more than a dozen research scientists and analytical chemistry technicians providing analytical chemistry support to both internal and external clients. Our Group is best known for our publicly available Laboratory Analytical Procedures (LAPS), which provide detailed methods for the summative analysis of biomass materials: My research interests are focused the use of multivariate statistical tools for the exploratory data analysis of chemical data (chemometrics) and the application of these tools to develop low-cost and rapid analysis methods for material characterization using Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy.I am the author or co-author of over 100 publications, including 45 peer-reviewed journal articles.I lead a research project funded by the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) entitled \"Analytical Development & Support\". This project has been the highest-rated project in the BETO porfolio for the last 4 years.
