ABOUT ED SMITH

I specialise in treating paediatric tumours, with a strong focus on advanced radiation therapies such as proton therapy and XRT to minimise treatment side effects. My operational and research interests lie in leveraging health informatics to enhance patient care, as well as utilising real-world clinical outcome data to drive improvements in treatment outcomes.I played a key role in the establishment of the Proton Beam Therapy clinical service at The Christie, which became the first high-energy NHS proton treatment centre in the UK when it opened in 2018. I also spearheaded the development of strategies to collect patient treatment and outcome data for those receiving proton therapy.Currently, I serve as the Clinical Director of the Christie Proton Centre, Director of the Christie Proton Clinical Outcomes Unit (PCOU) and NHS Proton Registry, and as Director of The Christie Proton School, where I oversee education and training initiatives for professionals both nationally and internationally. Additionally, I hold a MAHSC Clinical Chair in Clinical Oncology at the University of Manchester.Outside of work, I split my time between Manchester and Cumbria.
