Highly experienced medicinal chemist and drug discovery leader with more than 20 years industry experience across VC-funded start up and mid-sized UK, European and US-based biotech.Early career leading both chemistry and cross-disciplinary project teams across a diverse range of biological targets including enzymes, chemokines, GPCRs and kinases, as well as several prodrug programmes with significant personal contribution and leadership in the delivery of 7 candidate drugs, 4 of which have progressed into clinical trials – BVT115959, a pH selective A2a agonist for neuropathic pain, PRX167700 and PRX201848, two differentiated VAP-1 inhibitors for inflammatory pain and fibrosis, and PRX177561, a CNS penetrant CXCR4 antagonist for glioblastoma. Role at BenevolentAI as SVP of Drug Discovery leading a multi-disciplinary team of laboratory medicinal chemists, senior chemistry leaders, project leaders, process chemists, cheminformaticians and computational chemists which delivered four further candidate drugs including BEN8744, a potentially best in class PDE10 inhibitor for ulcerative colitis, BEN28010, a potentially best in class CNS-penetrant CHK1 inhibitor for GBM, and BEN34712, an oral, potent and selective brain penetrant RARɑ-biased agonist for ALS.• Responsible for a team of up to 50 in-house scientists and up to 45 external CRO chemists, across UK, European and Asian providers. • Member of senior management team and portfolio review board with shared responsibility for a portfolio of more than 10 discovery and development programmes. • In depth knowledge and leadership across all phases of drug discovery from target ID through preclinical development.• Strong knowledge of IP having manged Proximagen’s IP portfolio of more than 50 patents over 5+ years. • Remodelled and led Proximagen’s exploratory process to identify new drug discovery programmes for portfolio entry – role included target identification, target validation, hit ID and hit expansion.• Experience in leading in-licensing MTA and due diligence activities, and in out-licensing and partnership discussions. • More than 7 years experience in the application of AI and ML approaches to expedite drug discovery.• Strong knowledge of other drug discovery disciplines including ADME / PK, pharmacology, safety and CMC.• Inventor / author on over 25 patents and 20 papers in peer reviewed journals, including \'Expert-Augmented Computational Drug Repurposing Identified Baricitinib as a Treatment for COVID-19; Front Pharmacol.
