ABOUT CHAI LIM

I was born and raised in Singapore, where I learned the values of grit, excellence, and humility. My life philosophies are: 1) Success is the reflection of the goods you create and the wrongs you perfect. 2) Can help, will help. With over 20 years of neuroscience research experience, I have spent much of my career in Australia, collaborating with world-leading organizations. My current research focuses on applying advanced neurophysiology to psychiatric and mental health conditions in children and adolescents. I aim to develop personalized medicine approaches for early diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring, using techniques like EEG, fMRI, and non-invasive sampling (saliva, urine) for longitudinal studies on conditions influenced by lifestyle factors. Key research highlights include- Two ECR Fellowships from MSRA and SMHR - Australia-China Science Ambassador - Over $6M in research funding (NHMRC, NMRC, NIMH)- Publications in top journals like NEJM, Mol Psych, and BBI (see selected Pubs below)- Four patents - Contributions to two Eureka Prizes (2017 – Innovation in Med Res, Finalist; 2018 – Sci Res) Now a tenured professor in Germany, I lead a talented research team dedicated to developing personalized, resilient models of care for children and adolescents in a rapidly evolving world. I’m passionate about mentoring ECRs and providing statistical consulting for students and researchers working with complex clinical datasets. I view adversity as a source of strength and hope to inspire others in the field to pursue innovation and perseverance. As a lifelong learner, I’ve completed MBiostat while running a lab (20••••19) and am currently learning German while adjusting to life in Germany with my young family. What I Do- Research: Lead a research pipeline on targeted metabolomics, studying amino acids and metabolites in health and disease, discovering biomarkers, and developing therapeutic targets- Team Building: Lead a dynamic research team of junior psychiatrists, postdocs, and PhD students- Consulting and Mentorship: Offer statistical consulting to HDR students and researchers, specializing in complex clinical datasets, and mentoring ECRs in tryptophan research. Personal: Outside of research, I express my love for food through cooking. I’m an artisan chef with a passion for Cantonese, Singaporean, Japanese, Korean, Italian, and French cuisines. A proud moment was raising $9,500 for the Trish Foundation by cooking a 7-course dinner for eight guests, while also sharing my research on MS with people living with MS and their families.
