ABOUT ELISABET BJANES

During my first laboratory experience at Penn State University, I fell deeply in love with research. I continue to be enthralled by the collaborative fields of microbiology, vaccinology, and immunology to this day. I have a strong background in immunology and microbiology, with an emphasis on host-pathogen interactions. Additional training included work with bacterial pathogenesis and vaccine development. My current project is developing and testing a nanoparticle vaccine candidate against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in sepsis and acute pneumonia animal models. My repertoire of research skills includes • Experimental design, execution, and analysis • Mammalian and bacterial cell culture • Mouse husbandry and infection models • Multi-color flow cytometry • Confocal microscopy • Biochemical cell fractionation • Molecular biology and microbiology techniques I am fascinated by host-pathogen interactions, cell death as well as mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, bacterial pathogenesis and vaccine development. My long-term goals include working in academia or industry to identify and test novel therapeutics that control multi-antibiotic resistant pathogens.
