ABOUT DURAN DURIEUX
I’m a mechanical engineer and project leader with over 15 years of specialized experience in mine ventilation, refrigeration, and industrial hygiene, delivering complex projects in deep, hot, and technically demanding mining environments. I have lived and worked in the mining industry in South Africa, Canada, and currently in the USA. I actively publish and present at mine ventilation conferences, including international forums, and I am a registered Professional Engineer in both Nevada, USA and Ontario, Canada. I have an affinity towards first principles analysis coupled with software computation to solve problems.Currently, I serve as Ventilation Engineer for The Boring Company where my focus is mainly on emergency ventilation systems for tunnel fires, as well as tunnel boring machine ventilation and refrigeration including industrial hygiene monitoring and control. In addition, I investigate novel concepts to effectively and economically ventilate hundreds or thousands of miles of tunnels.I previously served as Principal Advisor for Ventilation & Refrigeration at Rio Tinto’s Resolution Copper project in Arizona, which has some of the most challenging heat conditions of any underground mine. I was responsible for all aspects of ventilation & refrigeration, as well as compliance as the nominated site manager for hazardous atmospheres and fire precautions.I started my career at BBE Consulting, a specialist mine ventilation & refrigeration firm, where I spent over a decade progressing from mechanical engineer to project manager leading multi-disciplinary teams across global projects.I’ve led engineering from concept to commissioning — managing detailed mechanical design and vendor procurement through construction oversight, commissioning, and performance certification. I have a proven track record delivering subsurface ventilation and refrigeration studies and infrastructure on time, according to standards, and within the unique project requirements and constraints.Organizations:• Nevada Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (PE license #034538)• Professional Engineers Ontario, Canada (P.Eng license #10•••••14)• ASHRAE member (#83••••71)• Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa associate member (#61926)Skills:Refrigeration | Turbomachinery | Project management | MS Office | Psychometry | Heat exchangers | Commissioning | Matlab | Thermodynamics | Fan & duct systems | Construction | Solidworks (CAD)| Heat transfer | Studies | VentSim | Pumping systems | Quality control | Fluid mechanics
