ABOUT DAVID SMITH
I specialise in property litigation, property regulation, and data protection - particularly in relation to residential tenancies and agencies. My particular interest and expertise is in advising and litigating on new legislation and obligations and in making creative use of existing law to solve client problems. I have extensive experience in the civil and criminal law relating to property. I have worked in every level of the civil courts from the county courts all the way to the Supreme Court. I also have substantial experience in the First Tier and Upper Tribunals in several different chambers contesting decisions of local authorities. Finally I have experience in the magistrates and Crown Courts defending landlords and agents from prosecutions in relation to property matters. I have lectured and written extensively on civil procedure and am widely recognised for my work on mediation on which I have written extensively in a UK and international context.I have written and spoken extensively on landlord and tenant law and I am particularly known for my work on the Housing Act 2004 and on mediation in which I am a recognised expert. I provide advice at all levels from landlords with one property through large corporate letting and estate agents through to tenancy deposit protection schemes, local authorities, the Welsh Assembly, and to representative bodies. My property work also includes acting as the former Policy Director of the Residential Landlords Association as well as providing public affairs advice and representation for other businesses active in the property sector. In this role I have substantial experience in appearing before parliamentary committees and meeting with civil servants, peers, MPs and ministers in Westminster and in devolved bodies as well as appearing regularly on TV, radio and in the print media for my clients. All views and opinions are of course my own and I am fully to blame for them!
