ABOUT DANIELLE STEEN FATKIN

I am an Assoicate Professor of History at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. I am the author of several articles about the history and archaeology of the Roman empire in southwest Asia, including “Invention of a Bathing Tradition in Hasmonaean Palestine.” Winner of the 2018 Lombard Wright Prize for Teaching, I prioritize meeting my students with warm encouragement and high expectations. I have lectured on the archaeology of Israel, Palestine, and Jordan to professional and lay audiences around the country and am the president of the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological Institute of America. My upcoming book,/The Politics of Purity: Archaeology and Society in First-Century Judaea/, examines the dialogic relationship between politics and the creation of purpose-built spaces for ritual immersion in the southern Levant from the second century BCE to 70 CE.As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs from 2020 to 2024, I was the project manager for Knox’s $1.23 million “Humanities for all Times” grant from the Mellon Foundation. As part of the grant, I oversaw annual faculty development workshops while providing research stipends to over sixty faculty members who were part of the Abolition for All Time Digital Humanities Lab. I supported all faculty at Knox through a regular program of faculty development with a particular focus on early career faculty. Committed to curricular excellence, I also oversaw the college’s program reviews and contributed to our ongoing accreditation processes. I am a higher ed leader who is interested in bold curricular change. I aim to advance new faculty development opportunities in order to achieve greater equity in higher education institutions.
