Reader at the Department of Social and Psychological Sciences, The University of Huddersfield (UK). Senior Adviser in Transitional Justice for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). President RC48 on Social Movements, Collective Action and Social Change of the International Sociological Association (ISA). Co-Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Transitional Justice (IJTJ). I am a member of the British Sociological Association (BSA), the European Society of Criminology (ECS), and the International Sociological Association (ISA). I am affiliated with the BSA \'Sociology of Rights\' and \'Sociology of Emotions\' Study Groups. Before joining the University of Huddersfield and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), I was a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Security Studies at Birmingham City University, and a Research Fellow/Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Leeds (UK). I previously worked at EAFIT University, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as an Associate Expert and as a Research Fellow at the Social Research Centre and Popular Education (CINEP) and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation. My research agenda focuses on the relationship between violence, armed conflict, social justice, human rights and security from a socio-political perspective. It explores how social movements and victims of armed conflict and violent contexts are implementing communicative citizenship actions to claim human rights and security in local and regional public spheres; and how these actions are affecting the construction of political and cultural memory, dimensions of social recognition, and degrees of solidarity and power in divided societies. My research work emphasises the role of citizens, social movements and the third sector in changing contexts of insecurity and violence, and how local and national governments can create security strategies where respect for human rights is a central aspect. I especially use the theoretical framework of the Sociology of Rights to underpin the responsibility of the state to create public policy in order to improve conditions of security and human development.
