Life is short. Inhale the good shit. Exhale the bullshit.”The 12 year old me uttered those words and caught a verbal beat down. Now granted, it was AT CHURCH, DURING CHOIR REHEARSAL…but, don’t judge me. The exasperated choir director is forever tattooed on my brain, screaming “your mouth is either going to get you in a lot of trouble or make you a lot of money”. Meanwhile, the choir director was, well…nevermind. The 12 year old me didn’t understand what the big deal was, since my intentions were pure. But the lashing I took in front of the whole choir triggered a fight or flight response that sent me into a muted cocoon of sorts, for most of my life.It wasn’t until turning 50 that my therapist helped me reframe some of the trauma that I was still carrying from certain life lessons, forcing me to see things differently. The goal, they said, was to acknowledge my emotions when they appear and be more intentional about how I choose to react. To help with that, they advised me to spend time speaking directly to my 12 year old self, because she’s the one who’s actually reacting.It seemed weird at first, but it went something like this…“12 year old Tajuana, YOUR VOICE MATTERS. So much so, that one day, the United Nations will honor you with a Woman of Distinction Award.”“12 year old Tajuana, YOUR VOICE HAS POWER. So much so, that one day, you’ll be listed as #43 on the list of Most Influential Women In Business (source: VIP Global Magazine, 2021).”“12 year old Tajuana, YOUR VOICE WILL HAVE A RIPPLE EFFECT. So much so, that one day, you’ll be a #1 Best Selling Author and your book would be listed at #37 on the list of Top LinkedIn Books of All Time (based on sales; source: Book Authority).”“12 year old Tajuana, THE REAL PRIZE IS PEACE. So much so, that one day, peace becomes a line item in your budget.”These conversations literally saved my life because between 2015 and 2021, I had 21 seizures (with no prior history). Yet, I became seizure-free in 2021 and haven’t had one since. Coincidence?Hell, my therapy budget could’ve been cut in half, if the 12 year old me healed sooner.
