About Guillermo Ulises Ruiz-Esparza

Medical Doctor (M.D.), BioNanotechnologist (Ph.D.), and entrepreneur focused on the development of Molecular NanoSystems at the Divisions of Renal Medicine and Engineering in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.Dr. Ruiz-Esparza’s pioneering work has led to the development of multiple nanomedicine platforms across immunology, oncology, and cardiovascular disease, including nanoparticle-based delivery systems designed for the spatiotemporal and sequential release of genetic material, drugs, proteins, and other therapeutics; nanoengineered hydrogels to modulate the immune system; nanosensing technologies for diagnostics; and nanostructured artificial tissues.He has received more than 22 national and international awards recognizing his contributions to science, innovation, entrepreneurship, and social impact. Among them, MIT Technology Review honored him with the prestigious TR35 Award as one of the leading innovators under the age of 35. More recently, he received the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Award and the Future of Health Technology Award at the MIT Media Lab. He was also named one of the 30 most influential Latino leaders under the age of 30 by El Mundo Boston and one of the most promising Mexican individuals under the age of 40 by CNN Expansión. In addition, Ciudad de las Ideas, in association with Singularity University in Silicon Valley, recognized him as a Gifted Citizen, and he received the National Youth Medal in Science and Technology, bestowed by the President of Mexico. He has further been distinguished as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in the United Kingdom and has met with King Charles to discuss innovation and entrepreneurship. Dr. Ruiz-Esparza has authored numerous publications in high-impact scientific journals, several featured on journal covers, and has presented at leading scientific forums, with his work highlighted by hundreds of media outlets worldwide. He has also co-founded several companies, including Veri Nano, and helped raise multiple rounds of investment. Within the Harvard ecosystem, he identified the translational potential of a laboratory technology and co-developed an early venture concept that reached the final of the Harvard University President’s Innovation Challenge and later evolved into a company whose technology received FDA approval and was acquired by Boston Scientific.Beyond his scientific and entrepreneurial work, he is involved in social initiatives and has co-founded nonprofit organizations focused on gender equality, economic empowerment, and education.
