About Paul Mullan

I\'m a pediatric emergency physician who has spent 20 years building the evidence base and practical infrastructure for clinical debriefing, starting with the first post-event debriefing program in medicine in 2010 and now helping organizations scale their debriefing programs through StatDebrief.Since that first program, I\'ve collaborated with 80+ teams worldwide to build practical, sustainable debriefing programs and published the foundational peer-reviewed research on clinical debriefing implementation.I continue to practice clinically and lead quality improvement efforts locally while contributing nationally through initiatives like Choosing Wisely and research collaboratives focused on frontline care. That clinical work keeps me grounded in the day-to-day realities of delivering care effectively with multidisciplinary teams.I founded StatDebrief because too many of healthcare\'s most persistent challenges, such as communication breakdowns, missed learning opportunities, silent frustrations of frontline staff, and preventable harm, persist not because teams lack commitment. They persist because most organizations haven\'t built reliable infrastructure for frontline teams to reflect, speak up with psychological safety in place, and turn insights into action in real time.I watched too many teams walk away from critical events in silence, carrying lessons that never reached the next patient. We build infrastructure for almost everything in healthcare except helping frontline teams learn from what just happened together. That\'s the gap StatDebrief exists to close. The best learning in healthcare often happens closest to the work, in the minutes after an event, with the people who provided the care. StatDebrief helps organizations create the right structure so those conversations can happen quickly within the time constraints of our busy shifts. Depending on where an organization is in its journey, that might look like professional services for debriefing program implementation; PSO-protected learning infrastructure through the Advancing Healthcare Debriefing Quality (AHDQ) PSO; or a customized debriefing technology platform that scales across an enterprise.I work with hospital and health system leaders, patient safety and quality professionals, risk management leaders, and clinicians who are serious about building high-reliability debriefing systems. If you\'re exploring what structured debriefing could look like in your organization, I\'d welcome the conversation.
