About Ken Lang
The murder of a friend propelled me into becoming who I am today. Therese was murdered in 1988 and I became a police officer in 1989 with the ambition to work as a homicide detective someday. Her story was compelling, I felt called to police work. My career started with the Havre de Grace Police Department, but I transitioned to the Baltimore County Police Department in 1991 when I saw the opportunity to flourish. The patrol assignment is a given for all new officers but within a few years, I demonstrated a knack for investigations and became a precinct-level detective. In a short time, I was assigned to CID and investigated rapes, robberies, and murders for 15 years of my 25-year career. Two unexpected turns defined my future. First, I excelled in my violent crime investigation skills and was asked to teach as an adjunct at the police academy. Secondly, my talents as a sketch artist were revealed and I became one of two sketch artists in the state of Maryland. By 2014, the climax of my 25-years of police experience and completion of my master’s degree opened the opportunity to build a criminal justice program at the University of Valley Forge. In 2016 another door opened, and it carried me to Glenville State College in West Virginia, where I work as an assistant professor and the department chair in the criminal justice program. I also assist state legislators with developing restorative justice practices, research aspects of police sketches, and provide expert analysis through my consulting business, KEN LANG CONSULTING, LLC. I enjoy sharing my knowledge so much that I also spend time on the Law & Crime Trial Network serving as a commentator. When I’m not providing expert analysis or teaching, I’m usually enjoying a getaway with my wife, sitting on the front porch of my Appalachian home, taking in the breathtaking mountainous scenery, reading the Lord of the Rings Trilogy or about American history, and sipping a glass of pinot noir.
