ABOUT JOSEPH HOFMEISTER

After nearly 30 years of experience helping others face cancer, I consider “difficult conversations” a core sub-specialty of my oncology and hematology practice. My BackstoryMy dad was diagnosed with leukemia when I was in high school. Understanding his disease was a struggle for my family. It took time and numerous conversations with doctors, but the more my dad understood his options, the more he began to make choices that allowed him to face cancer his way. His approach to cancer became one of the most important lesson on living that I ever received. When I became an oncologist, I didn’t just want to treat the disease; I wanted to treat the entire experience of life with cancer. So, I came up with simple analogies and stories based on my personal experiences to help patients and families make sense of what was happening. My hope was to empower them to live despite cancer, as my dad had done. These conversations eventually inspired a book, How Cancer Is Like a Dandelion, but it wasn’t until my daughter, Abby, developed a rare medical condition that I fully understood how transformative conversations can be. Turning confusing information into simple, human conversation became a lifeline for Abby, allowing her to move past the fear and anxiety she felt and on to living her life. After Abby’s experience, we both developed a new calling in life—to share the unique, patient-centered language we created with other professionals in the medical community who face difficult conversations every day.
