ABOUT JOHN STEGALL

A powerful, engaging, connected leader, John is actively pursuing his vision to make social-emotionallearning and conscious leadership the foundation of education in the 21st century.Born in Akron, Ohio, a city once nicknamed “The Rubber Capital of The World” because of its thriving,homegrown industry that supported economic prosperity for hundreds of thousands of its residents,John’s early life was profoundly shaped by the economic disruption that shut down factories, put his own parents and family through considerable financial hardship, and shredded the social and economic fabric of the city and surrounding region during the late 1970s,1980s, and early 1990s. His experiences as a student growing up during this immense period of socioeconomic turmoil and transition inspired him to investigate, pursue, and advocate for education as means to holistically empower and revitalize communities and improve the life chances of individuals across all demographics by closing gaps in equity and leveling the playing field to give people a fighting chance for success in life no matter where they live or who they are.A proud 1996 graduate of Akron’s East High School, John earned his undergraduate degree and teaching license in his favorite subject, Social Studies, from the University of Akron in In 2011, while attending the University of Cincinnati, he earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership, as well as his principal’s and superintendent’s licenses. More recently with Cincinnati, he successfully completed his doctorate in Urban Educational Leadership. He is a tenacious and prolific life-long learner, earning a second master’s degree, in public policy and management, through the University of Pittsburgh in 2019, and is currently pursuing additional studies with Cleveland State University and The Ohio State University.As a professional, John’s career in education spans more than 20 years, and consists of teaching within traditional and online modalities, serving as an administrator with charter schools, traditional schools, and prison schools, as well as teaching college courses in technology and teacher development. During his personal time, John enjoys music, art, travel, reading, meditation, volunteering, meetups with friends, and fine dining with his fiancée, Susie. He currently resides in Columbus, Ohio.
