About John Baker

I am a mechanical engineer with extensive experience in aerospace engineering and space systems. Throughout my career, I have focused on engineering workforce development (with the goal of creating experiential learning programs that provide my students with truly unique educational opportunities). These programs have involved (among other things) microgravity flight opportunities, near-space ballooning, blimps, drones, high-power rockets, and CubeSats. I have also had the privilege of serving as the Department Head for Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Alabama from 2013 to 2018, and the UA Campus Director for the Alabama Space Grant Consortium from 2004 to 2017. My current research interests include heat transfer (with an emphasis on thermal radiation heat transfer), thermodynamics, and fluid flow as these topics relate to energy and space systems.
