About R. Jordan Hazelwood
Dr. Jordan Hazelwood joined the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Appalachian State University as an Assistant Professor in 2017. After completing her master’s degree, she worked as a speech-language pathologist at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, IL where she specialized in the assessment and rehabilitation of adults with swallowing disorders and traumatic brain injury. During her doctoral studies, she worked clinically at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) treating acute, inpatient adults and supporting outpatient speech-language pathology needs as a Research Coordinator at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. She was awarded an NIH Predoctoral T32 Traineeship under the mentorship of Drs. Bonnie Martin-Harris, Judy Dubno, and Heather Bonilha in 2016.In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Hazelwood collaborates with the department’s clinical educators at Watauga Medical Center and the Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge to support evidence-based clinical practice in the treatment and assessment of voice and swallowing disorders and graduate student training. She is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, and has completed fellowships in Clinical Research Ethics and Interprofessional Education. Dr. Hazelwood is the Professional Development Manager for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Special Interest Group on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (SIG-13) and is a regular peer reviewer Dysphagia, American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and SIG 13\'s Perspectives. She presents her research nationally and internationally, focusing on the impact of physiology and standardization of dysphagia assessment on the quality of life for people with swallowing disorders.
