Gilberto Lopes, a medical oncologist, is division chief and professor of clinical medicine, and one of the associate directors for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.He serves as board member for the Union International for Cancer Control (UICC) and is Editor-in-Chief emeritus for the ASCO’s JCO Global Oncology. He chairs the Access to Oncology Medications (ATOM) coalition. He previously worked at Johns Hopkins and was CMO and CSO for the Oncoclinicas Group, the largest oncology provider in Latin America with more than 130 units and 1500 oncologists in over 35 Brazilian cities. His overarching mission is to improve cancer care and control around the world. As a lead investigator in the study Keynote 42, Gilberto presented the results at ASCO\'s plenary session in 2018, leading to FDA approval for pembrolizumab in advanced lung cancer with PD-L1 expression. Dr. Lopes has published more than 350 scientific and opinion papers in journals such as Cancer, Nature Reviews, Lancet, Lancet Oncology Journal of Clinical Oncology, Health Affairs and the Wall Street Journal. In addition to delivering lectures around the world, he has been principal, co-Principal Investigator or steering committee member in more than 200 studies and clinical trials. Dr. Lopes is or has been a committee member for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the European Society of Medical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), as well as an executive board member for the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group (LACOG). He has also served as an expert for the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization and advised governments, professional societies and industry on issues related to new technologies in cancer, health economics, policy-making and cancer control and treatment in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Lopes has led several entrepreneurial and business consulting activities in drug development and healthcare services. He is the co-founder of Biomab, a diagnostics and therapeutic company developing point of care tests for the detection and new target selection for the treatment of HPV-related cancers, Board member for Morphometrix, a start-up improving capabilities of ultrasound technologies, and leading scientific advisor for Lucence. He is a member of the strategic board for Immorta Bio, a cancer and longevity biotech, and advisor for OpenEvidence, a leading Health AI start-up.
