ABOUT DREW NORMAN

I am a senior qualified solicitor with more than 20 years’ experience in private practice and industry, with a specialisation in construction and infrastructure projects and disputes. I also draw on industry experience gained from first career as a quantity surveyor. I am currently the Group Head of Legal for Sir Robert McAlpine which is a position I have held since April 2018. I developed and implemented detailed corporate governance framework for negotiating contract terms to mitigate legal risks. I drove the business effort on making claims in connection with the Covid pandemic to the mitigate the risk of the late completion of projects – a critical issue for the company. A current focus is maximising McAlpine’s defence and recovery efforts in relation to cladding and fire safety defects claims. I have built and manages a lean and hard-working legal team which receives very positive feedback from the business whilst keeping the legal spend lower than competitors (around 0.3% of turnover). I changed the way the legal team operates to employ standard solutions to most of the issues on which advice given for reasons for efficiency and risk mitigation. I am still hands on in leading on advising and negotiating contracts including the £350m 21 Moorfields project (Deutsche Bank HQ) which sits on top of Moorgate Underground Station. Before my current position I was:• a Senior Solicitor at Sir Robert McAlpine from January 2007 to March 2018 for which I was recruited to broaden the offering of the legal team to contentious construction law;• a Solicitor in the Projects Department of city law firm Simmons & Simmons where I advised on a broad range of non-contentious construction, contentious construction and Projects; and • the first trainee seconded to the legal team of Carillion from March to September 2003. I enjoy getting to the bottom of complex problems and developing and implementing pragmatic solutions. I adopt a risk-based approach to legal issues informed from commercial and industry background as well as legal experience.
