ABOUT ARNAB MUHURI

Arnab Muhuri completed his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering in 2009. He later obtained his Master of Technology in 2012 and Ph.D. in 2018 in Satellite Earth Observation from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India. In 2018, he was conferred the Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Research by Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, at the 56th Institute Convocation of IIT Bombay. In 2019, he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship to continue his research at Universität Heidelberg. In 2020, he was awarded the European Research Stay Grant to work as a Visiting Scientist at CESBIO-CNES, Toulouse, France. In 2021, he joined CARTEL at L’Université de Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada, where his research was funded by the Discovery Grant and CREATE program of NSERC. During this period, he also completed a postgraduate diploma. In 2022, he joined the Earth Observation and Modelling (EOM), Kiel University, Germany. He is working towards his habilitation and teaches courses on satellite Earth observation. His research interests lie in the development of algorithms that integrate fundamentals of imaging physics with classical image processing and advanced machine learning techniques for marine and other interdisciplinary applications. Within the ICEBERG project funded under Horizon Europe, he is working on integrated marine litter monitoring frameworks and development of unsupervised techniques for morphometric measurement of nanoplastic particles using electron microscope images. He has collaboratively worked with SAC, ISRO, and DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems, The University of Tokyo, Japan, supported by the DST-JSPS grant. He has worked with extraterrestrial (Chandrayaan-1 Mini-SAR) and Earth observation missions including RADARSAT-2, Landsat, and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) for applications like lunar polar exploration, high-mountain cryosphere monitoring, natural disaster impact assessment, agricultural parameter retrieval, and development of polarimetric SAR decomposition techniques. He regularly reviews for TGRS & JSTARS, International Journal of Climatology, Remote Sensing of Environment, etc. He serves as a Research Alumni Network Ambassador for Heidelberg Alumni International, Universität Heidelberg, and is currently the Joint Secretary, IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA), Europe chapter.In 2024, he was one of the Project Leads for NASA HW at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.
