About Andrea G. Barthwell

Andrea G. Barthwell, MD, DFASAM, is the Chief Medical Officer of Wire Health, a company that is transforming how people access behavioral health services. She is also the Founder of Encounter Medical Group, P.C, manages and consults through the global health care policy firm EMGlobal. Reflecting her long-term commitment to individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), she was named as the founding Chair of the Board of the Foundation for Opioid Response Effort (FORE) with a $100 million endowment. President George W. Bush nominated Dr. Barthwell in December 2001 to serve as Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). The United States Senate confirmed her nomination on January 28, 2002. As a member of the President\'s sub-cabinet, Dr. Barthwell was a principal advisor in the Executive Office of the President (EOP) on policies aimed at reducing the demand for illicit drugs. While serving in the EOP, Dr. Barthwell was an active member of the White House Task Force on Disadvantaged Youth and the White House Domestic Violence Working Group. Prior to her presidential appointment, Dr. Barthwell was a member of the Food and Drug Administration\'s Drug Abuse Advisory Committee. Reflecting her commitment to merging science and practice, Dr. Barthwell has focused on finding innovative ways to bring care to individuals in need of substance abuse treatment. Her work with ethnic minorities, people with HIV/AIDS, and women with children has focused on delivering individualized care. Dr. Barthwell earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Wesleyan and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School (’80). Dr. Barthwell served as President of Encounter Medical Group. As a founding member of the Chicago Area AIDS Task Force, Dr. Barthwell hosted a weekly television show on HIV/AIDS. She is a past president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. In 1997, Dr. Barthwell\'s peers named her one of the \"Best Doctors in America\" in addiction medicine and in 2003 Dr. Barthwell received the Betty Ford Award, given by AMERSA.
