ABOUT VOLKER STOCKER

I am an economist with a focus on the digital economy and Internet ecosystem. As head of the multidisciplinary Research Group “Digital Economy, Internet Ecosystem, and Internet Policy” at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society and as a postdoctoral researcher with the Internet Network Architecture (INET) Group at TU Berlin, I am at the forefront of investigating the dynamics, mechanisms, and implications of digitalization. With a doctoral degree in economics (Dr.rer.pol.) earned with the highest distinction (summa cum laude) from the University of Freiburg, I possess a deep understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the field. My extensive experience as a visiting researcher at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, TU Berlin, Michigan State University, Northumbria University, and MIT, has provided me with a diverse set of perspectives and knowledge that enables me to explore the complex business,(techno-)economic, and institutional challenges that emerge due to digitalization and the digital transformation. I employ a variety of research methods, including economic modeling, theory-driven, policy-oriented, and conceptual approaches, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of the digital economy. Additionally, my research is interdisciplinary, bringing together complementary expertise and methods to holistically explore some of the most pressing issues related to the digital economy. My major research interests include the economics, evolution, and regulation of digital infrastructures and the Internet ecosystem, broadband and Internet policy, and platform business models. With my expertise and experience, I am well-equipped to contribute valuable insights and solutions to the field.
