ABOUT VARSHA PARDESHI

For my Ph.D. research I have worked on the genetic diversity and phylogenetic studies of Indian sheep breeds. I have had the opportunity to learn and employ contemporary wet-lab protocols (molecular biology) and software tools (population genetics) during the course of my research. During the course of my research, I gained an insight into how molecular tools can be used to explore the available genetic diversity, and to understand evolutionary processes which have led to the present day sheep population in India. Furthermore, I could correlate the genotypic data with the phenotypic characters, and this combined data can be used to refine the breed classification system and to assist in genetic conservation. This work has given me an interest to further explore molecular data, to better understand population genetics, and to gain further expertise in the use of bioinformatics tools to find genes responsible for various traits and diseases. Currently leading a part of our group involved in the development of genomic resources for flax and supervising two Ph.D. students work. Monitors the thesis work of two master’s students
