ABOUT STROMA COLE
I am a Reader at the University of Westminster and director at Equality in Tourism. I combine my academic career with action research and consultancy. I have a British Academy knowledge Frontier award to investigate Household Water Insecurity and Gender Based Violence. Previous research explored : tourism, women and water inequality in Labuan Bajo Indonesia and previously in Tamarindo, Costa Rica; Bali, Indonesia; Kerela, India. I have worked for the UNDP in Sumatra and the FCO in Mexico. I was the Chair of Tourism Concern from 20••••11, a charity fighting exploitation in tourism. I have published widely, my latest edited collection, just published with CABI is Gender Equality and Tourism: Beyond Empowerment and previously, with Nigel Morgan: Tourism and Inequality: Problems and Prospects. My monograph: Tourism, Culture and Development: Hopes, Dreams and Realities from Eastern Indonesia, documents tourism and change in remote villages in Flores over a period of 15 years. I have published a variety of journal articles in Annals of Tourism Research, Human Ecology, the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Tourism Geographies and Tourism Management. With research interests in responsible tourism development in less developed countries, the anthropology of tourism and the link between tourism and Human Rights, I am an activist researcher critiquing the consequences of tourism development.
