About Stephen Neal
I am a Registered Psychologist (CA and AZ) and Certified School Psychologist in CA and AZ. Most of my time is spent working with children with various learning abilities and from various cultural backgrounds (students with/without learning disabilities, at risk children, adolescents) and their families. My responsibilities entailed but are not limited to: Providing services for special education students, the services include: testing, screening, parent contact and counseling, coordination of program, placement, follow-up, review, staff development and training, consultant for staff and maintenance of records. For regular students I serve as a referral for those students needing special help involving testing, psychologist counseling not available as part of the school\'s regular program. In addition, I provide the following if time is available: program development, emphasis on special education programs and guidance services, research, reports, parenting classes, and consulting services in the areas assigned to the Special Services Department; in service to general staff (the interpretation regarding learning needs of regular students); long-range planning, attend meetings, conferences, committees, assist in budget preparation for special programs, liaison to feeder schools, liaison to community agencies and state reports. My research experience is in the areas of: positive interventions for at-risk traumatized youth, health psychology, projective assessments (TAT), and academic assessment with children and adolescents. I also have extensive experience in training school teachers and administration from Long Beach Unified School District, Oak Groove School District, Santa Clara Unified School District, Avondale Elementary School District (AZ), Dysart Elementary School District, and Cartwright Elementary School District (AZ) on various academic, cognitive and behavioral strategies when working with students with or without learning disabilities. Specialties: My specialities is providing therapy to families, public speaking, program development, teaching classes at the elementary, high school, and college level, coaching basketball at the elementary, high school, college, and pro level, and teaching parenting classes.

Conduct psychological assessments, interpret results, and problem-solving meetings. Provide therapy. Lead crisis intervention efforts and provide development of functional assessments and behavior intervention plans. Provide assistance to staff in the design and implementation of appropriate interventions and accommodations for students. Evaluate and/or translate research into practice and understand research design and statistics in sufficient depth to plan and conduct investigations and program evaluations for improvement of services. Contribute to program development. Provide support services to parents/guardians as needed. Coordinate and/or collaborate with a range of individuals/agencies to promote and provide comprehensive services to students and families. Provide and/or assist in professional development for staff, parents, and/or community. Participate in professional growth activities on a yearly basis including recertification for CPI, workshops, in-services, professional reading materials. Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data. Participate in building or program activities. Collaboration and direct communication with medical doctors, family agencies, and other mental health. Oversee district procedures and practices regarding psychoeducational evaluations, including determining evaluation instrument needs, reviewing reports for compliance with state and federal rules and guidelines, and assuring that best practices in evaluations. Assist with pre-service training to all staff. Participate in and support decision making for students referred to a more restrictive environment within the district’s programs, along with the Special Education Compliance Coordinator. Develop and maintain effective information systems pertaining to communication, training, and other data required for completing annual data report and biannual Office of Civil Rights surveys in compliance with federal and state legal requirements.
