About Seema Sambrani
Dr. Seema Sambrani is an accomplished academician and researcher, currently serving as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Life Sciences at Somaiya Vidyavihar University. She leads and oversees interdisciplinary programs in Biotechnology, Nutraceuticals, Chemical Biology and Drug Design. In addition to her academic leadership, she serves as the Convener of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell at the university.Dr. Sambrani previously held key administrative positions as Assistant Director and IQAC Coordinator at S K Somaiya College, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, until June 2024. With a distinguished career spanning over 28 years in higher education, she brings extensive expertise in institutional development, academic leadership, curriculum innovation, industry-academia collaborations, and capacity building.In recognition of her excellence in teaching, Dr. Sambrani was honoured with the Best Microbiology Teacher Award by the Microbiologists Society of India in 2020. She has also been a Principal Investigator for a research project under the prestigious Women Scientist Scheme (WOS-A) funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.In April 2025, Dr. Sambrani was recognized for her outstanding contributions to science and celebrated as one of the leading women in science for her dedication, innovation, and exemplary leadership by ICT, the Women Cell, AFSTI, and F2F.Her research interests lie in industrial and environmental microbiology and biotechnology, with a focus on solvent-tolerant microbes and their enzymes. She has contributed significantly to the field through ten research publications, two patents, one copyright, two textbooks (including one on Plant and Animal Biotechnology), and five book chapters. Her work on solvent-tolerant lipases earned her an invitation as a speaker at the Global Biotech Congress in Boston.Dr. Sambrani has also been a Senior Research Associate at IIM Ahmedabad, where she played a pivotal role in the proposal development for the Biotechnology Industry Research and Development Assistance Council (BIRAC), Government of India.An active participant in the scientific community, she has engaged in over 40 national and international conferences as a presenter, jury member, resource person, chairperson, and advisory board member.Dr. Seema Sambrani is widely recognized for her commitment to scientific excellence, innovation in education, and her contributions to the advancement of biotechnology and life sciences in India.
