ABOUT RAMESH KUMAR

I have been working in the field of sustainable iron and steel making for over 6.5 years. My PhD research focused on the impurities (C, Mn, Si, S, and P) removal from liquid iron using hydrogen plasma, aimed to remove all impurities in single step process. To explore this work, I indigenously designed and fabricated a transferred arc plasma furnace (5 kg capacity). To fine-tune process parameters, predict impurity evolution, and understand the cumulative behaviour of multi-impurity removal, I integrated Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modelling with experimental data.Currently, I am working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, where my research is centred on sustainable ironmaking routes, including hydrogen, biomass, and ammonia-based direct reduced iron (DRI) production. My work combines reduction kinetics, process understanding, and system-level sustainability assessment to support the transition toward low-carbon and green steelmaking. My broader research interests include hydrogen metallurgy, alternative reductants, plasma-assisted processes, process modelling, life-cycle assessment (LCA), and data-driven optimisation for industrial decarbonisation. I am keen to collaborate with academia and industry on technologies that accelerate the global shift toward net-zero steel production.
