About Praveen Kumar
I solve complex physics associated with Complex Fluid flows (Multiphase, Combustion) and Heat transfer. I leveraged commercially available CFD tools (Starccm+, Ansys etc.) to optimize designs, troubleshoot complex problems, and drove innovation in the Aerospace, Oil & Gas domains. Some of my key accomplishments include: Computational Combustion • Successfully utilized CFD simulations to optimize a novel burner design, resulting in a 30 % reduction in NOx emissions for a leading power plant manufacturer. • Performed LES to determine self-excited Dynamics (Frequency and mode shapes) of the Combustor. • Awarded for leading and successfully completing a defense project on computational combustion in a Solid Rocket motor. • During my Doctoral research, I conducted research on flame dynamics and extinction of flames spreading over solid fuels, which has applications to fire safety. Flames close to extinction exhibited Thermo-Diffusive instability, a phenomenon important for premixed Hydrogen combustion as well. Heat transfer Related • Convective heat transfer related - Performed Liner thermal analysis associated with wall effusion cooling to predict hot spots and sent feedback to FEA team for conducting stress and thermal analysis. • Radiation related - Elucidated the effects of thermal radiation on flame spread phenomena over solid fuels in microgravity environments. • Compared performance of parallel and counter flow type cooling channels in a liquid-cooled Li-Ion battery pack and estimated cooling efficiency, pressure drop. Multiphase CFD • Reduced intermixing of hydrogen and oxygen bubbles and improved performance of membraneless electrolyzers. • Determined pressure drop across electrode (meshed material) using porous media model.
