He obtained his PhD from the Ohio State University in 1992 and has 202+ publications including 15 books, 166 journal articles and book chapters, and 21 major data releases. Dr. Thenkabail has conducted pioneering research in hyperspectral remote sensing of vegetation and in that of global croplands and their water use for food security. He was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in recognition of “pathfinding, pioneering breakthrough research in hyperspectral remote sensing” by the American Society of Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). He has led the release of the world’s first 30-m Landsat Satellite-derived global irrigated and rainfed cropland products This work demonstrates a “paradigm shift” in global mapping using remote sensing, big-data analytics, machine learning, and petabyte-scale cloud-computing on Google Earth Engine (GEE). Data released through NASA’s EarthData: Dr. Thenkabail’ s contributions to series of leading edited books places him as a world leader in remote sensing science. Books: 1. Six Volume Remote Sensing Handbook (91 chapters, 3512 pages): 2. four-volume seminal Hyperspectral Remote Sensing of Vegetation (1450 pages, 50 chapters). Dr. Thenkabail is Editor-in-Chief (2011-present) of the Remote Sensing Journal, and Associate Editor (2017-present) of American Society’s Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE & RS).
