ABOUT PHIL STUDDS
I have over 35 years experience specialising as an Environmental Engineer in both the consulting industry and academic research and have worked for a number of large consulting firms. My background includes the overall project management (PRINCE 2 qualified), technical and financial management of many Environmental, Geo-environmental and Contaminated Land projects. I regularly publish papers in industry journals/magazines discussing current issues in contaminated land and I authored the CIRIA C765 Asbestos in Soils on-site pocket guide. Other interests include contaminated sediments. An early success included my team winning the Ground Engineering Sustainability Award 2009 for a project with the Canal and Rivers Trust (formerly British Waterways. We saved the client £1.5M by carrying out detailed human health and groundwater risk assessment which negated the need to send sediment material to a hazardous waste landfill. More recently my work with sediments and impacts to river water quality has been developed through work with the Mining Remediation Authority (formerly the Coal Authority) and their abandoned metals mines programme. We have had excellent successes reusing impacted dredged sediment by adopting the CL:AIRE DoWCoP protocols to consider the sediment as construction resource rather than a waste. Last year this project shortlisted for the Brownfield Briefing Sustainability Award.My team won the Ground Engineering Sustainability Award 2014 for a project with Halton Borough Council. I was project director on a £2M soil and groundwater remediation scheme which prepared an ex-ICI site to be handed over to a contractor prior to development of the Mersey Gateway crossing. The site (particularly the groundwater) was heavily impacted with chlorinated solvents. I managed a team who carried out detailed groundwater risk assessment and a remediation options appraisal to develop a suitable remediation strategy. More recently I have given presentations on PFOS and PFAS impacts to groundwater and surface water using experience gained from my US and Nordic colleagues. More recently I have helped various clients with their End of Waste accreditation. For one client we gained EoW accreditation to reuse biomass fly ash as a fertiliser substitute. We are currently advising another client on EoW accreditation to reuse incinerator ash to generate construction aggregates.
