Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, the visionary Founder-Chairman of GNRC Hospitals, North East India’s first premier multi-specialty Hospital is widely known as the architect of Affordable Healthcare in Assam with a vision- ‘Health for All, Smiles for All.’ In 1980’s, moved by the plight of the people in North East India due to lack of access to quality healthcare, Dr. Borah decided to set up his own facility to provide the population healthcare and cure. This has eventually brought him to the fruition of the GNRC Hospital- Dispur in the year 1984 with the help of Dr. KV Mathai, the legendary neurosurgeon from Vellore, who came forward to join Dr. Borah in his endeavour. With a vision to provide quality education in nursing, Dr. Borah established Asian Institute of Nursing Education in the year 2004. It is successfully offering courses in BSc Nursing, Post Basic Nursing, and MSc Nursing.In order to facilitate employment for local youth, Dr. Borah established Medishop Retail Chain- ‘GNRC Medishop.’GNRC Sixmile, was his another foundation in 2008 to serve the population with quality healthcare.Concerned that most private healthcare facilities, including those set up by him, were unaffordable for the majority of the population, while public healthcare facilities were over-burdened, Dr. Borah initiated dedicated efforts to formulate a model that enabled access to quality, affordable healthcare for majority of the population which led to the formulation of an operating and service delivery model, which found its expression in ‘GNRC Institute of Medical Sciences’, a 1200-bedded facility which commenced operations in early 2014 at North Guwahati. This campus, popularly known as GNRC Medical, provides affordable access to quality healthcare services through an ultra-low-cost model.His untiring quest for providing affordable healthcare facilities to all resulted in the opening of GNRC Medical, Barasat at the service of people of West Bengal in the year 2018.
