ABOUT MARIA ZULUAGA
I am an accomplished Social Worker with 25 years of experience treating people with substance use disorder and psychiatric disorders. My motivation to continue working in this field has been fueled by the strength and courage exemplified by the people I serve. In spite of the unimaginable hardships faced by the people I have worked with, I have witnessed a demonstration of fortitude, endurance and above all hope for a better life. The debilitating disease of addiction and mental illness could obscure hope. However, care and compassion could rekindle hope. My commitment has been to empower people by honoring their autonomy and their right to select a different path of life at their own pace. By providing education, guidance, support and acceptance, the patients and clients I have worked with over the years have acquired the tools and support needed to find the path they once lost. During the last 19 years, I have worked at the Addictions Institute at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital. While working at this organization, one of the most valuable and fulfilling undertakings I was involved in was collaborating in the establishment of the first Masters in Social Work Field Placement Program for the Medication Assisted Treatment Clinics within the organization. Collaborating in the implementation of a MSW Field Placement Program and supervising MSW students have been two professional achievements that have propelled me into the world of academia. For the past five years, I have worked at Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University. Working in a university setting has fortified my passion for teaching and for preparing MSW students for their professional careers. Coming from a humble background has been the impetus of my investment in promoting education as one of the fundamental ways to end some of the inequities and disparities evident in our society today. I am also a firm believer in the power of change through support, understanding, empathy, kindness and forgiveness.
