The Centre for Nutraceuticals is a unique and discitinctive initiative with the purpose and objectives to:• Be a catalyst for improving human health and wellbeing guided by research and innovation.• Drive knowledge exchange with the industry aiding scientific development and validation of innovative products and approaches.• Be a credible source of reliable and trustworthy scientifically validated information for professionals as well as the general public via knowledge dissemination and training.The centre has unique knowledge and expertise in the area of phytochemicals, performance nutrition, nutraceuticals, supplements, and functional foods. It leverages this knowledge to assist in concept and/or product development and validation as well as analytical services and training. The centre will be based within the School of Life Sciences, University of Westminster. It launches from a springboard of a broad portfolio of existing industry projects and partnerships ranging from SME’s to multinationals.

ABOUT M. GULREZ ZARIWALA

I am a research academic with a strong focus on innovation and translation of research outcomes.Areas of focus are nutraceuticals, functional foods and supplements – micro/nano formulations for enhanced absorption and activity of bioactives, and in vitro and human clinical studies for understanding mechanisms of action and efficacy validation. I have a proven track record in science-based nutraceutical new product development and product validation via in vitro and human studies. Past projects include a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project that helped develop the UK’s top selling liquid iron supplement product now marketed in 40+ countries worldwide. Current projects include collaborative research with world leaders in nutrition supplements and ingredients as well as small and medium companies. My recent outputs include development of a range of high-performance wellness and sports supplement products that was launched worldwide in partnership with the international footballers Mathieu Flamini and Mesut Ozil.My academic research spans the areas of obesity, type 2 diabetes, satiety and neurodegeneration. I lead a research team of over 20 researchers working on projects funded by UK and overseas organisations. Originally a Pharmacy graduate, I went on to read an MSc in Drug Delivery at UCL School of Pharmacy and a PhD in Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London. I have published 70+ research articles, abstracts, and book chapters and am established as one of the leaders in the field of oral iron supplement research.
