ABOUT LILLIAN SCHUMACHER
Higher education is entering one of the most consequential periods in its history. Demographic change, economic pressure, and technological disruption are forcing colleges and universities to confront fundamental questions about their purpose and their future. The institutions that thrive will not be those that simply endure these pressures. They will be the ones willing to define who they are, what they stand for, and how they serve the next generation of students.I believe the greatest threat facing higher education is not declining enrollment. It is declining nerve. As president of Tiffin University, my leadership is grounded in a simple principle: growth and innovation must be tied to student success, student mobility, and real-world outcomes. Expanding programs, partnerships, and opportunities only matters if it improves the trajectory of the students we serve. That philosophy shapes how we approach higher education leadership, institutional strategy, and innovation in three ways: Expansion should never be pursued for its own sake. Every investment must strengthen institutional purpose and improve measurable student outcomes, Education is not merely about transferring knowledge. It is about preparing individuals to lead lives of character, courage, and contribution. Universities must develop leaders, not simply graduates. In an era defined by scale, automation, and rapid technological change, the most powerful differentiator a university can offer is connection. Every student should be known, challenged, and supported. At Tiffin University, these principles guide how we design academic programs, build industry partnerships, and develop leaders. Our work focuses on creating an environment where students are not simply educated but transformed. The true measure of success is not what the campus looks like, but who comprises it.Leadership requires courage. Higher education requires innovation. The future belongs to institutions willing to embrace both.I bring experience in governance, financial oversight, and long-term strategic planning at the board level, with a focus on transformation and sustainable growth. I am open to board service and advisory opportunities aligned with innovation and workforce development.I write and speak on higher education leadership, innovation, and the future of universities.
