The effects of floodplain forest succession on flood risk and river research aimed to address the limitations of conventional models that treat floodplain vegetation as uniform, by incorporating realistic vegetation heterogeneity and floodplain forest succession into hydrodynamic simulations.Key responsibilities and achievements- Conducted controlled laboratory experiments to simulate flow conditions across different floodplain forest stages- Built and validated 2D hydraulics models (e.g. for backwater effects, flow resistance), supporting scenario-based flood risk assessments - Performed detailed data analysis with Python to evaluate how vegetation succession influences flood-wave propagation and floodplain water storage- Created data visualizations to support interpretation of complex hydraulic responses and communicate findings to interdisciplinary stakeholders- Contributed to the development of evidence-based management strategies, such as targeted planting and adaptive forest management, aimed at reducing flood heights while preserving ecosystem functions.This project helps me to bridge the gap between ecological processes and flood risk modeling, supporting integrated river management approaches that consider both human safety and ecosystem health.Research project in collaboration with- Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany)- University of Naples Federico II (UNINA, Italy)
