A general outline of a day as a Junior Resident (SHO) in the Cardiothoracic and Vascular department would include me reaching the hospital and prepping/ conducting a quick ward round prior to the arrival of the consultant, after which I would accompany the COW for the grand rounds and carry out/ designate all the jobs to be done for the day. I was also responsible for keeping patients notes up to date, ordering tests/ scans and arranging cross departmental referrals as and when necessary as well as noting down their discharge summaries.I have also conducted clinics as the sole doctor and oversaw medication/ admission/ management plans of cardiac patients.I also had the option to attend the Operation Theater and I have assisted in various surgical procedures as well. It was also expected of me to carry out basic procedures such as catherisation, IV line insertion, blood sampling, neck line removals, basic I&D, wound dressings as well in certain cases have done pleural taps under supervision.
