ABOUT KATHERINE POLAK

I’m an international director working to improve the lives of animals through practical, sustainable programs and policy change. My focus is on humane dog and cat population management, rabies elimination, and supporting local partners to build capacity and create long-term impact. I’m especially committed to ending some of the most challenging issues in animal welfare across Asia, including the dog and cat meat trade. I’m double board-certified in Shelter Medicine (ABVP) and Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM), and I hold master’s degrees in both Public Health and Forensic Science. Throughout my career, I’ve combined clinical expertise with a One Health perspective to tackle complex animal and public health issues. Education and mentoring are also a big part of my work. I teach veterinarians and animal welfare professionals from around the world through the University of Florida’s online shelter medicine program and guest lecture at other veterinary schools. Along the way, I’ve been grateful to receive recognition from colleagues and peers, including: The ICON Award in Veterinary Medicine (2025) for global contributions to animal welfare and veterinary medicine Humanitarian Alumni of the Year, Iowa State University (2021) American Humane’s Veterinarian of the Year (2020) Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Veterinarian of the Year (2019) I serve on several veterinary and animal welfare boards and committees, where I help advance shelter medicine and strengthen the field globally. I’m also the author and co-editor of Field Manual for Small Animal Medicine (Wiley Publishing), a hands-on guide designed to help deliver veterinary care in rural and underserved communities.
