To live or to die - this does not seem to be difficult to answer, but could you choose? And I am not talking about euthanasia, the whole issue is about controlling symptoms that reduce quality of life. In Palliative Care and Pain Management we have to think about how we want to achieve a specific goal - and who as well as what we are aiming at. It is time for a change - do not just sedate patients, try to get rid of the symptom that is important to the patient. And be honest enough if YOU do not know how to reach the aim - keep asking! You will also grow by learning! That is what I try to do each and every day: learn from colleagues, learn from your staff - and most important: learn from your patients and their families!
