ABOUT HERNAN BOTERO DEGIOVANNI
Hello! Thanks for your interest in my profile. My personal journey has made me go through a diversity of topics and research interests. I started my career studying international trade. I then moved to studying crime and enforcement during my PhD. However, due to the fact that my life has always been associated with farming through my family, I started studying agricultural economics as a hobby that eventually became my professional life. Currently, I am working on the intersection between agricultural economics, environmental economics, and public policy. I find myself particularly attracted to analysing the effects of environmental and climatic variables on agricultural production and food security and on how farmers adapt to those environmental and climatic effects. I also specialise in the development of mathematical and statistical methods aimed at studying the relationship between ecosystem services and land allocation. In my research, I employ a diversity of tools such as STATA, R, Python, MATLAB, or ArcGIS. I also employ several statistical methods such as Latent Class Analysis, Choice Experiments, Bayesian Networks, Cluster Analysis, Time Series, Panel Data, and Spatial Econometrics to carry out my research. Lately, I became interested in the use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning. I am interested in employing the former methodology to develop statistical models to forecast prices of agricultural products and in the latter methodology to develop classification models for several purposes in agriculture. Finally, my experience has allowed me to work in a diversity of environments where I have learned to work collaboratively with different cultures and under very diverse work conditions and rules. I have also learned to solve problems collaboratively and individually, with resourcefulness and resolution. I believe that life is a continuous stream of experiences, which teach us how to solve problems creatively. Hence, I confront life from a positive perspective, always attempting to extract the highest possible knowledge from those daily experiences.
