ABOUT HAMIED A HAROON
I love doing what I do! My research focuses on novel and advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning and analyses techniques to try to understand how the living human body works in health and disease. Most of my work has concentrated on the brain. I have also worked on the heart - MRI movies of the beating heart are breathtaking! My current research involves investigating the structural, functional, physiological and metabolic differences in the brains of children with autism, before and after a novel intervention. Fascinating stuff! My favourite techniques are diffusion MRI and tractography. I have developed software for analysing HARDI (high angular resolution diffusion imaging) data, which gives a measure of microstructural complexity in the brain (non-invasively and in vivo). This analysis method is affectionately called DOC (diffusion orientational complexity). The same method generates PDFs (probability density functions) for probabilistic tractography. I want to take this method outside the brain.I am disabled and have been all my life. My personal experiences have made me passionate about disability equality. I get myself involved in equality activities where I can! I have realised that the challenges are not as big for people with visible disabilities, like me, as they are for those whose impairements are hidden.
