ABOUT FLORIAN OPPEL
I am a tax lawyer advising on corporate tax law (including restructurings and M&A), international tax law and selected civil and corporate law matters. Furthermore, I am experienced using German and foreign foundations, in particular for asset succession purposes. My client base includes German and international companies (often family-owned), high-net-worth individuals and family offices. In the area of family-owned businesses, I not only cover tax aspects on company level, but also pressing questions on the level of the shareholders, in particular on asset and company succession as well as on relocation matters. I originate from Schwerte in North Rhine-Westphalia near Dortmund. After military service I studied law in Bonn and Cologne. I received my doctorate in Bonn with a thesis on foundations and foundation tax law, which was awarded with Kathrein Privatbank’s (Vienna) dissertation prize. After the legal clerkship, I started as a lawyer and tax advisor at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. I serve as assistant professor at the University of Düsseldorf, act as lecturer in tax law at the University of Cologne, and give lectures and seminars in my fields of interest on a regular basis. I am editor and author of numerous books and articles contributing to commentaries on the Transformation Tax Act, Foreign Tax Act, Income Tax Act, Corporate Income Tax Act and Tax Treaty Germany/Ireland. I am a member of the IFA, chairman of the Young IFA Network (Germany) and a member of the Specialised Institute of Tax Advisers (Fachinstitut der Steuerberater). At the moment I very much enjoy belonging to and building up a team specialising on corporate tax law / family owned-businesses with my great colleagues at YPOG.
