ABOUT DAVID DUNKLEY GYIMAH

Dr David Dunkley Gyimah PhD is the UK’s first Knight Batten Winner for Innovation in Journalism. He built one of the UK’s 1st video news magazines platforms before YouTube, described as \"foreshadowing the future\". An Applied Chemistry grad before turning to journalism, he’s been a correspondent in South Africa during their Apartheid transition freelancing for the BBC WS and later working at BBC Newsnight, Channel 4 and ABC News. The combination of science and tech, background (he grew up in Ghana), diversity and inclusion, and innovation informs his practice. A former Artist-in-Residence appointed by Jude Kelly CBE at the Southbank Centre, he\'s recognised by many respected figures e.g. James Montgomery (BBC), Jon Snow, Pulitzer Prize winner Jan Schaffer, Jude Kelly CBE etc as an “original”, “Innovator” and “pioneer”.(see here https://viewmagazine.medium.com/reputation-4e227673fdf7) He\'s a pioneer in videojournalism and has taught of students/people its original craft, from the FT, Chicago Tribune, across Africa, Russia, and China. His continuing work earned him the International Videojournalism Award in Berlin. His PhD pioneers a story form mixing cinema and journalism ( Cinema Journalism) advised by original cinema veriteist Robert Drew. Gyimah has built & branded platforms from the onset of the web, worked in dotcoms (1st editor of Justigiving.com), and was creative director of Re-active (a Soho based agency headed by Jon Staton- former head of TV at Saatchi and Saatchi). As an academic he’s launched, headed up and developed several innovative courses and programmes within digital labs, Startups, across different universities. His work in different spaces includes: AI, VR, Promos, Mobos, design and systems thinking. He’s cofounder of the diversity journal \"Representology\", between Cardiff University and the Sir Lenny Henry Centre; co-producer of the digital UK version of A Great Day in Harlem featuring Black and Brown TV talent, and produced the visuals for President Obama\'s \"100 days\" at a classical concert at the Southbank Centre. His many diverse interactions include: Politics producer, Content Editor for NATO\'s joint task project, Lennox Lewis\' filmmaker fighting Tyson, Google Reviewer for their Innovation fund, and British Library as advisor/writer for their 500 years of News exhibition. He was the Asper Visiting prof at UBC. He\'s a Reader/ Associate Professor at Cardiff University. Contact him for talks, presentations etc.
