ABOUT CLARICIO PEGUERO DECASTRO

I’m an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist with 35+ years of experience caring for surgical and chronic pain patients at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem Hospital Center. I earned my MD in 1989 from University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, completed a surgery residency at Harlem Hospital Center (Columbia University affiliate) and anesthesiology residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by a Pain Medicine fellowship at New York‑Presbyterian/Weill CornellSince I’ve directed the Pain Management Service at Harlem Hospital, building a multidisciplinary program that integrates interventional techniques, medical acupuncture, and integrative therapies to improve outcomes for adult and pediatric patients. I also serve as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, where I mentor residents and medical students in perioperative care and pain management best practices.My clinical interests include multimodal analgesia, cancer‑related pain, neuropathic pain, and health‑equity initiatives for underserved communities. I’m active in the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, and I regularly present at grand rounds and professional conferences.Fluent in English and Spanish, I’m passionate about patient education, quality improvement, and advancing pain medicine through research and collaborative care models.
