ABOUT CATHERINE S. SHAFFER

Dr. Shaffer is a scientist and researcher located in British Columbia, Canada, specializing in the prevention of financial crime and violence risk assessment and management. She is a Strategic Planning Analyst in a Government of Canada Intelligence Hub. In this role, she assists in research projects and the dissemination of strategic information to combat money laundering and other financial crimes, such as terrorist financing, in BC. Dr. Shaffer is also an Adjunct Professor in Forensic Psychology and Law at Simon Fraser University, ranked as one of the top law-forensic programs in North America, and Owner of Shaffer Research and Statistical Consulting, which was established to help researchers working in academia and the private sector with research design and statistical analysis to produce high-quality and publishable research. Dr. Shaffer has authored 60 journal articles, chapters, professional manuals, technical reports, and assessment tools, and has given over 100 presentations across twelve countries at professional conferences and events, post-secondary institutions, and police agencies. She is a co-author of the Adolescent Risk Reduction and Resilient Outcomes Workplan (ARRoW), a risk management and treatment planning guide that is currently used in Canadian criminal justice settings with several thousand adolescents who engage in general, violent, and sexual offending each year. She is also a co-author of risk assessment and management tools for intimate partner violence among adolescents (lead author) and gang involvement (co-author). Her research has been featured on T.V, on radio, in print, and online across five continents. Dr. Shaffer has received awards for her work from the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychology-Law Society, and the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services, including the Christopher Webster Award for significant early career contributions to the forensic mental health field. She is certified as a Canadian Financial Crimes Professional by the Canadian Financial Crime Academy.
