ABOUT DOUGIE SMITH

I began my work career in the field of Construction Project Management, working on a wide variety of Building and Civil Engineering projects.In 1990, I was seconded to my then employers’ safety department for 6 months, which was extended to 12, eventually Health and Safety becoming my new career. Joining the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) as an Affiliate Member and completing the NEBOSH General Certificate and Diploma laid the foundation to what has and still remains a very rewarding career. Many changes have occurred over this time with Environment and Quality being added to various roles that I held and still hold. Having achieved Full Member status of IOSH I then applied for and was admitted to the Register of Safety Practitioners.(RSP)I was awarded the new Chartered Status of IOSH in November 2005, this was automatic with being an RSPMy Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality experience has been wide and varied, I have been responsible for an Open Cast Mine, Rail Infrastructure projects, Marine & Civils Works, Road Building including Structures, Steel & Concrete Framed Buildings and Housebuilding.My current role within the Electrical Generation and Supply industry involves provision of Safety, Health and Environmental advice, including advice for legal compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. My experience has allowed me to deliver on the following with various employers that I have had the pleasure to work with. Writing and Implementing Safety Policies and Management Systems, with maintenance of those systems to the ISO standards 9001, 14001 and 45001.Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as ISO Certification bodies and Contractors.Managing Internal Audit programmes, executing Audits, and providing Assurance to the organisation.Designing and delivering internal Safety, Health and Environmental training Programmes, which include for behaviour-based programmes. Principal Accident Investigator, including the use of Root Cause techniques and Just & Fair culture being used as a foundation for Investigations.Putting something back into Industry and the community is important to me, and my volunteering experience has been as follows.IOSH Northeast Scotland Branch saw me hold office as Branch Vice Chair, prior to this I was Communication Coordinator.I currently sit on the Board of a Charity within the Health and Social Care Sector. I have held the additional position of Chair since August 2023.
