In this role, I will help GE Aviation bring to market our next generation of innovative, industry leading products by leveraging my security experience to develop & execute embedded product security strategies for aerospace.The role involves (but not limited to)-Steering future security technology roadmaps by participating in technology & methodology trade studies & R&D programs-Leading & participating in the full development lifecycle for civil & military aircraft products; including definition of product security objectives, analyzing product architectures for security vulnerabilities, evaluating threats, qualitatively assessing security risk, defining & managing product security requirements, coordinating & conducting security test activities, penetration testing, supporting certification, accreditation activities, & documentation-Growing the organization\'s capabilities by sharing knowledge of cyber security tools, methodologies, & hands-on experience analyzing & conducting pen tests on embedded product technologies-Interfacing with customers, partner companies, suppliers, & other senior leadership-Create competitive advantages for GE by developing efficient & innovative product security strategies which reduce project risk & yield more secure product designs-Promote a culture of product security engagement which emphasizes shared responsibility in securing GE Aviation products from potential cyber threats & vulnerabilities-Capture business opportunities by developing product security approaches, participating in technical trade studies & generating cost estimates for product security support-Support & coordinate with interfacing organizations such as Cyber Intelligence, Systems Safety, Integrated Logistics Support, & Quality-Lead technical investigations to determine validity & applicability of vulnerability claims made against GE Aviation products or components-Contribute to design practices & work instructions for product security engineering

ABOUT DOUG NICHOLS
I joined GE Aviation (then known as GE Aircraft Engines) in 1995 as an Edison Engineer (then known as the Technical Leadership Program). One of my Edison rotations was completely outside my original training as a Mechanical Engineer and was more software and systems based. I enjoyed this rotation so much that after completing several rotations and a field assignment I came off program into the Control Systems and Software engineering group in Lynn, MA. There, I increased my software, systems and controls knowledge while developing embedded jet engine control systems and software. I was also highly involved in the creation, modification and maintenance of many software tools. I continued in this role taking on more responsibilities over time until moving to GE Aviation System in Grand Rapids in December of 2007, shortly after GE purchased the site.Then I started working on in-flight refueling technologies and their embedded control systems. I continued this work for several years until funding for the project ran out. At this time I switched to a more system’s integration role and then transitioned into a Sub-Section Manager role in the Navigation and Guidance – Flight Management Systems group. While a sub-section manager, I got involved in the Software A-Course helping finalize courses and as a supervisor over the first SW A-course class in GE Aviation. I remained involved in the Software A-Course, became the Manager of the Advanced Courses in Engineering for GE Aviation Systems for both the Classic and the Software tracks and remained in that position for several years.I am now a Staff Embedded Product Cyber Security Engineer and am working with GE Aviation products to ensure they remain safe in the highly connected world we all live in now.
